What do you pack when you head to MD Anderson for cancer treatment? If it's your first trip, you might be a little overwhelmed.
So we asked the experts --the patients, caregivers and survivors that make up MD Anderson's Facebook community. Here's what they recommend packing for a trip to MD Anderson:
Something to keep you busy while you're here. Whether it's your laptop or tablet, a book, games or letters of encouragement, it can be helpful to have something to pass the time and keep your mind occupied while you wait.
A notebook and pen or a digital voice recorder. Your first visit can be overwhelming, and it may be difficult to take in all the information you receive. Not only is it a good idea to bring a list of questions for your doctor, but many of our patients also find it helpful to take notes or record their appointments so they can remember the information later.
Comfortable shoes. Our Texas Medical Center campus is large and you may have to walk from one building to another if you have multiple appointments. Comfortable shoes make the walk easier. We also recommend that you download the MD Anderson mobile app on your smartphone or tablet, or pick up some maps so you can find your way around.
Binoculars for the observation deck. Many patients and caregivers enjoy heading up to the observation deck on the 24thfloor of our Main Building. This quiet space offers some great views of the Texas Medical Center and downtown Houston.
A jacket or a sweater. Yes, it's cold in here. But during cancer treatment your body temperature is subject to change. So it's best to be prepared for all temperatures.
Water. It's important to stay hydrated during cancer treatment, so be sure to bring a water bottle to carry with you to your appointments. Drinking water also helps ease fatigue, a common cancer treatment side effect.
And don't forget to bring these key items recommended by a few of our patients: a smile, a loving heart, a positive attitude, and, of course, hope.
