Daughter honors dad by giving blood in his memory

Facing the holidays after the death of a loved one can be incredibly tough, but Valeria Medrano is channeling her grief into action and gratitude.
Valeria wrote to MD Anderson to express appreciation for the “great care” her father, Luis Sergio Medrano, received during his three years of treatment for liposarcoma, a rare cancer that develops in the body’s fatty tissue.
Shortly after Luis’ death this past August, Valeria began searching for ways to give back to other MD Anderson patients while also honoring her father’s memory.
Giving blood honors dad and supports patients
In the process, 17-year-old Valeria realized her school would be hosting a drive for the MD Anderson Blood Bank as part of the high school blood donor program.
Blood donations collected through this program go directly to MD Anderson Blood Bank to help MD Anderson patients.
Valeria, a Deer Park High School student, knew that giving blood was the perfect way to honor her father and help other cancer patients.
“I knew I had to donate once I found out it would go to MD Anderson patients in the same position as my father,” she says.
Valeria is proud to say she donated this fall when MD Anderson visited her school and plans to continue doing so. She’s also encouraged her friends and fellow students to donate, letting them know who their blood benefits and how.
Strength and support came from family and friends
Luis was a diehard sports fan, says Valeria. He loved cheering on the Houston Texans football team and was known for sporting Houston Astros gear and Tigres UANL jerseys.
Luis was also known for his professionalism and dedication as an employee at LaPorte Rail and Terminal. A hard worker, Luis treated many of his coworkers like family.
“He loved family the most,” says Valeria. “Nothing was more important.”
From holidays to birthdays, graduations and lotería nights, Luis never missed a family event.
The devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, son and friend was known for his faith, bravery and resilience, especially in the face of his cancer diagnosis. Luis’ hopeful attitude and brave face could sometimes belie how sick he felt.
Valeria and her brother, Carlos, attended medical appointments, supporting their dad whenever and however possible. Their mom, Karla, was always by Luis’ side for any procedure, blood transfusion or chemotherapy treatment.
“He derived so much strength from that deep well of love and support. I know that is what gave him the ability to fight his long fight,” says Valeria.
A legacy of love and helping cancer patients
By donating blood, Valeria says donors can support other families facing a cancer diagnosis this holiday season.
“I’m so grateful for all the moments we spent together as father and daughter for 17 years. Sharing his story and reaching others who can also donate to help patients like my father, that’s my gift to him.”
She guarantees this is one gift everyone will feel grateful to give and to receive.
