The day of surgery/procedure
If you are running late, call Northwest Houston Surgical and Specialty Care at 713-794-5500.
On the day of your surgery, there are a number of steps you must take to help the procedure go smoothly.
- Bring a photo ID such as a Texas Driver’s License or passport for the check-in process.
- If you have sleep apnea and use either a CPAP or BiPAP machine, bring it with you.
- Leave valuables (cell phone, purse, wallet and jewelry) at home or give them to a family member before you check in for your surgery/procedure.
- Do not wear contact lenses, make-up, lotions, perfumes or deodorant.
- Do not use hair spray, gel or mousse.
- If you have dentures, you will be asked to remove them just before the procedure.
Your schedule in MyChart will have your procedure information, location and visit instructions.
Visitor/caregiver information
- You are allowed up to two patient visitors or caregivers at this location.
- However, only one patient visitor or caregiver is allowed in the pre-operative and post-anesthesia care unit at a time during your procedure. This is due to space limitations and for safety.
- Everyone must wear an MD Anderson-issued face mask in required areas.
- All visitors should stay home if they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past seven days, have respiratory symptoms or feel unwell.
- During the procedure:
- Caregivers can use the TV monitor in the waiting area to track their patient’s status. Look for the patient’s first initial, last initial and date of birth.
- The surgeon will update caregivers in the waiting room as needed.
- After the procedure:
- The Post Anesthesia Care Unit team will come to the waiting room to bring the caregiver to visit their patient in recovery.
- If you need to stay overnight for an extended recovery:
- One adult (18 or older) caregiver can stay with you overnight. A wristband will be provided to your caregiver. They should keep their wristband on for ease of re-entry. Ask your care team for a new band if your bedside caregiver changes.
- Additional visitors can stay until 9 p.m. They should use the Surgery Entrance.
- Overnight caregivers who need to re-enter the building after 7 p.m. can call the extended stay nurse station for access: 346-721-9850 or 346-721-9851.
- There is a vending machine with food and drinks on Floor 2.
Discharging outpatients
For outpatient procedures, a responsible adult (18 years of age or older) must be available to receive discharge instructions and take you home after your procedure.
- This person can come with you, or you can provide their contact information when you check in.
- This person must be available to speak with the care team by phone.
- You will not receive sedation medicine until the care team speaks to this person and confirms that they are available to receive discharge instructions and take you home after the procedure.
- If you do not have a responsible adult prepared to speak with the care team by phone and available to take you home, your procedure will be rescheduled.
- If you are discharged the day of your procedure, it is recommended that you have a caregiver stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure.
