Society of Surgical Oncology recognizes MD Anderson president’s outstanding contributions
Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson, received the James Ewing Lecturer Award at the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) 2020 International Conference on Surgical Cancer Care, held virtually in August. Pisters delivered the first-ever virtual James Ewing Lecture, reflecting on MD Anderson’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and the opportunities it presented. He emphasized the importance of leaders fostering trust and projecting hope through transparent communication, as well as providing inspiration for employees by recognizing openings for progress and change.
“Recognizing crisis as opportunity and mobilizing the organization to rise in the most difficult challenges can create motivation and energy to lead effectively during the most difficult times,” Pisters noted in his remarks.
The SSO James Ewing Lecturer Award, named for the pioneering cancer researcher and founder of the American Association for Cancer Research, is a distinguished honor given annually to a physician whose work has had a significant impact on surgical oncology.
