Curriculum
This intensive program is composed of a didactic phase followed by directed clinical training at affiliated hospitals and laboratories. During the didactic phase, formal lectures are presented on the principles of medical genetics, molecular and biochemical basis of genetic disease, karyotyping, hematology, clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetic technology.
Laboratory sessions coordinated with lectures and covering the fundamentals of diagnostic laboratory procedures are included in the didactic phase.
Bachelor of Science in Cytogenetic Technology
Students entering the two-year track at the junior level take 76 semester credit hours towards their degree.
Students entering the one-year track at the senior level take 49 semester credit hours towards their degree.
The semester-by-semester schedules include all courses needed to graduate, but the sequences are subject to change.
Students Enrolling Part-Time
Part-time enrollment is defined as a minimum of seven semester credit hours each semester. Additionally, not all courses are offered every semester. Therefore, students enrolled part-time should work closely with the Program Faculty in Cytogenetic Technology to complete a degree plan.
Students Enrolling Online
The online flexible options allow working adults to complete a degree in Cytogenetic Technology. Nearly 80% of the content is delivered online, including asynchronous delivered class content. Approximately 20% of the content is gained through direct campus participation. Students have access to online chromosome identification training through KaryoTutor and online course management software 24/7. Lab experience will be gained during a consolidated one-week lab session at the conclusion of each semester.
