16S rRNA Sequencing
16S rRNA Sequencing is an established amplicon sequencing method used to identify bacteria within a variety of microbiomes found in clinical samples, water, soil, animal specimens, and various environments. The 16S rRNA gene, a conserved genetic component, encodes the 16S subunit of the ribosome. This gene is universally present in all bacteria and archaea, which makes it widely employed for identifying and characterizing these microorganisms. Additionally, within the 16S rRNA gene, notably variable regions exist that prove invaluable for distinguishing individual bacteria and archaea. The 16S rRNA sequencing process includes DNA extraction, sample quality control, library preparation, sequencing, and data analysis.

Shotgun Metagenomic Sequencing

Shotgun sequencing can be employed to profile the taxonomic composition and functional potential of microbial communities. A typical shotgun metagenomic sequencing workflow comprises DNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and data analysis. With sufficient sequencing depth, shotgun metagenomic sequencing can identify bacterial species and single nucleotide variants.
