Resources for Research Collaborators
A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a legally binding contract that governs the transfer of research materials, including data, between two organizations or entities for use by the recipient in their research activities. MTAs are typically used when the transfer of Research Materials does not involve the exchange of money, although preparation and shipping fees may be charged to the recipient organization. The three most common types of MTAs at an academic institution are: transfer between academic or research institutions, transfer from academia to industry, and transfer from industry to academia.
In some instances, as described in the Research Material Transfer Agreement Policy #ACA1193, a Streamlined MTA (SMTA) may be utilized. In cases where an SMTA is appropriate, the MD Anderson PI must send an email to the recipient identifying the Research Material to be transferred and to whom it is being transferred to. It must also state that use of the Research Material signifies acceptance under the Universal Biological Material Transfer Agreement “UBMTA” terms and conditions along with a link to the UBMTA terms and conditions.
