Welcome to the Convergent Radiation Laboratory!
The Convergent Radiation Laboratory at MD Anderson specializes in the simulation and design of novel radiation-producing devices. We are currently working on several projects exploring the production of converging radiation beams.
In radiation therapy, we strive to deliver a tumoricidal dose to the cancerous tumor while protecting the surrounding normal tissues as much as possible. While all such efforts have been concentrated on utilizing radiation devices that produce divergent beams of radiation, we instead chose to employ a converging geometry for radiation treatments. This approach requires thinking outside the box and forcing rays of radiation to converge to a “focal spot” inside the tumor. This is akin to holding a magnifying glass in front of rays from the sun and creating an intense focal spot to burn a piece of paper or wood.
