Welcome to the Thoracic Imaging department at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The department is comprised of 14 board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists specializing in imaging. Our radiologists provide high-quality interpretations of a wide variety of examinations, including chest radiography, chest CT, low-dose lung cancer screening CT, FDG PET/CT, thoracic MRI, and cardiac CT and MRI.
In addition to providing a high level of clinical service, members of the Thoracic Imaging actively participate in clinical research and other scholarly activities within MD Anderson, as well as nationally and internationally.
The full range of thoracic and cardiovascular imaging is available, including chest CT, low-dose screening CT, CT angiography utilizing the latest acquisition and post-processing techniques, FDG PET/CT and MRI/MRA.
Lung cancer screening
MD Anderson provides low-dose CT screening for individuals at high risk for developing lung cancer. Our eligibility criteria are based on the results of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) and recommendations from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Research and Scholarly Activity
Radiologists in Thoracic Imaging actively participate in clinical research, leading many endeavors and collaborating with physicians and researchers from other clinical departments, including Thoracic Medical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, and Pulmonary Medicine. Recent and ongoing projects focus on the following topics:
- Lung Cancer Screening with Low-Dose CT
- Lung Cancer Screening Biomarker Trial – Lung Cancer Moonshot
- Quantitative Imaging and Radiogenomics of Thoracic Malignancies
- Dual-Energy CT in Oncologic Imaging
- Lung Cancer Staging
- MR & FDG PET/CT Imaging of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
- MR & FDG PET/CT Imaging of Esophageal Carcinoma
- Pitfalls in Oncologic PET/CT & CT Interpretation
- Pulmonary Infection in Immunocompromised Patients
- Radiation Therapy-Related Complications
- Pulmonary Nodule Evaluation
- Imaging of Thymic Epithelial Neoplasms
- Utilization and Reporting of CT Pulmonary Angiography
Multidisciplinary Conferences
Members of Thoracic Imaging actively participate in multiple multidisciplinary conferences, including:
- Thoracic Esophageal Tumor Board Conference
- Thoracic Multidisciplinary Tumor Board Conference
- Lung Cancer Screening Multidisciplinary Conference
- Thoracic Cardiac Imaging Conference
- Radiology-Pathology Correlation of Thoracic Diseases
- Thoracic Imaging Quality Improvement Conference
Education
The Division of Diagnostic Imaging at MD Anderson accepts one individual per year for a one-year fellowship in thoracic imaging. The fellowship offers extensive clinical experience in thoracic radiography, CT, MRI and FDG PET/CT, as well as electives in Cardiothoracic Imaging at Memorial Hermann Hospital and in CT- and ultrasound-guided biopsies in Interventional Radiology at MD Anderson. Academic time of 20% is allocated.
The objectives of the Thoracic Imaging Fellowship are to:
- Educate trainees in the advanced interpretation of chest radiography, CT, MRI, and positron emission tomography/computed tomography
- Educate trainees in the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, staging, pathology, treatment and complications of thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic malignances, and mesothelioma
- Provide an opportunity for academic research, with the case material and resources of MD Anderson
