The Psychiatry department assesses and manages behavioral symptoms, disorders and neuropsychiatric side effects of cancer and its treatment in both patients and caregivers. Our team includes psychiatrists, clinical specialists, clinical psychotherapists and advanced practice registered nurses. All are specially trained to care for MD Anderson’s unique population of patients and caregivers.
The department offers treatment for several conditions, including:
- Behavioral emergencies
- Cancer related anxiety and depressive spectrum disorders
- Psycho-oncology needs in pediatric patients
- Neuropsychiatric complications of cancer and cancer treatments
- Cancer-related sexual dysfunction
- Body image difficulties
- Emotional distress in caregivers
- COVID-related distress
- Substance use disorders (assessment and referral)
