With over 210,000 diagnostic exams performed and interpreted annually and multiple clinical trials and study protocols, the department of Abdominal Imaging offers a depth and breadth of clinical expertise, training, and innovation unparalleled across the country.
Our physicians are leaders in high profile medical and oncologic societies, including the Radiological Society of North America, International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance, Society of Abdominal Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network: Pancreatic Cancer Imaging Subgroup, the Ultrasound International Open, American Board or Radiology Exam Writer, and the American College of Radiology Imaging Network. Our physicians are frequent contributors to leading Medical and Scientific Journals having logged over 200 publications since 2013.
Our clinical goal is to maintain excellence in health care through continuing education, research, and quality improvement. Close collaboration with our referring clinicians, the Imaging Physics department, radiology technologists, and nursing is central to maintaining such a high level of clinical practice and sustaining the academic mission. With this model of cross-departmental collaboration, patients can expect to receive seamless, high-quality care often on a same-day point of care basis.

Research and Specialties
Abdominal Imaging is a leader in novel clinical advancements in diagnostic oncology imaging and therapeutic response assessment. The department currently engages in laboratory, translational, and clinical research including:
- Development of novel imaging biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and monitoring of disease response
- Imaging biomarkers of the cancer environment and imaging characterizes predictive of early treatment response in liver metastases, pancreatic tumors, prostate cancer, and gynecologic malignancy
- Genomic Imaging
- Investigation of novel MRI biomarkers in cancerous and non-cancerous tissue
- MR elastography
- Dual-energy CT evaluation of tissue composition in pancreatic and gynecologic tumors
- Contrast-enhanced US tumor assessment in the kidney and liver
- Outcomes research
Evolving areas of research include imaging metabolic pathways with hyperpolarized C-13, and PETMR, focal MRI guided prostate cancer therapy.
Education and Training
Abdominal Imaging Fellowship: The Body Imaging Fellowship in the Division of Diagnostic Imaging at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center offers extensive experience in cross-sectional oncologic imaging that includes CT, MRI, ultrasound and PET/CT imaging. Fellows are given the opportunity to perform CT/US guided deep biopsy procedures, if they elect to. Additional electives at affiliated institutions in the Texas Medical Center, such as St. Luke's and Methodist hospitals, allow the fellow the opportunity to broaden their exposure to include benign musculoskeletal disease. Fellows also actively participate in multidisciplinary tumor board conferences.
