School of Health Professions gets boost

Cardinal Health grants health professions school $25,000

Peter Hu, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Molecular Genetic Technology Program for MD Anderson's School of Health Professions, is the latest winner of the Cardinal Health urEssential Award, a national award that recognizes medical laboratory professionals' contributions to patient care.

"Peter believes that the public deserves well-prepared practitioners of diagnostic molecular science and clinical cytogenetics," wrote one nominator. "He takes time out of his very busy schedule, teaching, publishing and speaking, to visit schools of molecular genetics, cytogenetics and other medical laboratory science programs for accreditation to assure they meet the standards to serve the community."

Cardinal Health recently donated $25,000 to the School of Health Professions in honor of Hu. The contribution will benefit scholarships for students seeking careers in laboratory medicine through the Molecular Genetic Technology Program and the Graduate Program in Diagnostic Genetics programs.

The School of Health Professions is committed to the education of health care professionals through formal academic programs that award institutional certificates and degrees in health sciences.

About the Multiple Myeloma Moon Shot

Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer, with 27,000 new diagnoses in the U.S. annually. For patients with high-risk multiple myeloma, median survival is as low as two to three years.

Karen Fore, of Houston, is a six-year cancer survivor. She works in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at MD Anderson and volunteers with myCancerConnection, MD Anderson’s one-on-one cancer support community that connects patients and caregivers with others who’ve been in the same situation. Survivors Say: Glioblastoma expert Dr. Al Yung

W.K. Alfred Yung, M.D., professor, Neuro-Oncology, and a member of the Moon Shots Program™ executive committee, is an expert in clinical research and treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, the most lethal form of brain cancer. He is a 17-year cancer survivor and was recently named to the Blue Ribbon panel of experts selected to advise the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot, inspired by MD Anderson’s Moon Shots Program™ and led by former Vice President Joe Biden.

Among Friends: MD Anderson Advance Team member Barry Kessler

For years, Barry Kessler was under the misconception that MD Anderson is "a place you go when things are really bad." Several years and one melanoma diagnosis later, he praises the institution as "the only place to go. Period." Kessler is a principal at Simmons & Company International, Energy Specialists of Piper Jaffray and a member of MD Anderson's Advance Team, a volunteer board of "next generation" community and business leaders. A melanoma cancer survivor, he focuses his efforts outside of the office on helping #endcancer, once and for all.

iPromise: Jeff Lindley

Jeff and Marty Lindley met in 1968 at the University of Arizona. They married in 1970 and had a daughter, Jessica. They later moved to New Braunfels, Texas, and were active in the community. As a surprise, Jeff created the Marty Lindley Foundation by hosting an event at the Brauntex Theatre, inviting guests to wear purple in awareness of leiomyosarcoma, a soft tissue sarcoma. More than 500 people attended, including college friends, and raised $62,000 in Marty's honor.
