MD Anderson’s Isaiah Fidler, D.V.M., Ph.D., professor of Cancer Biology and a pioneer in metastasis research, received the 2018 Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research in April at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Isaiah Fidler, D.V.M., Ph.D., professor of Cancer Biology, received the 2018 Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research in April at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Fidler showed that metastasis, the spread of cancer beyond the primary tumor, is a non-random biologic event that depends on the interaction between tumor cells and their microenvironment, the normal cells, molecules and blood vessels that surround and feed a tumor. A tumor can change its microenvironment, and the microenvironment can affect how a tumor grows and spreads.
Most recently, Fidler published his team’s findings on a potentially significant new therapeutic approach to treating glioblastoma, a fast-growing and incurable form of brain cancer.
