Benefits extended to same-sex married couples

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling on same-sex marriage has cleared the way for MD Anderson Cancer Center to offer some long-awaited benefits.
Beginning July 1, benefits-eligible staff, faculty, educational appointees and retired employees were free to enroll their same-sex spouses, as well as dependent children of these spouses, upon presentation of a marriage certificate. They’ll receive the same benefits and services available to other families — from medical, dental and vision coverage to life and accident insurance — at the same cost.
In an email to all employees, President Ronald DePinho, M.D., said the high court’s June 26 decision provides equality and fairness.
“MD Anderson is a caring and diverse organization that promotes and celebrates inclusiveness at all levels,” he said. “Friday’s historic ruling is consistent with our culture and values, and provides equality and fairness to all faculty, staff, retirees and their families.”
