MD Anderson News Release November 11, 2010
New designs featured on Children's Art Project seasonal cards and gift items
MD Anderson News Release 11/11/10
With the holiday season quickly approaching, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Children's Art Project (CAP), has released its 2010 Holiday Collection - a line of products inspired from artwork by young cancer patients.
Yearlong, MD Anderson's young patients explore their creative side by developing artwork in weekly classes, with guidance from CAP art volunteers. The time spent creating seasonal designs is time away from the realities of their cancer treatment. Upon completion of their piece, each child's artwork then has the possibility to be featured in future holiday collections.
"Our revenue generated during the holiday season funds important educational, recreational and emotional programs all year," said Shannan Murray, CAP's director. "These gifts give back to patients and allow us to continue supporting their creativity and development."
An important aspect of CAP's 2010 Holiday Collection is its new line of gift items. Adding to the wide variety of seasonal cards and stationery, the "Busy Garden Phone Cover," designed by Stephanie, 9, of Houston, Texas, reveals a bright floral scene on a custom phone cover. Ten different covers are available and each features artwork from current and former designers.
The "Presents T-shirt," designed by Carrington, 20, of Midland, Texas, is an example of how new artwork becomes available and is then featured on popular gift items. This shirt contains several bold presents, swirling their way across a red background. Its creator is a longtime CAP participant, who is currently attending Baylor University on a scholarship funded by the sales of her work.
One of the staples of each season's collection is the assortment of holiday greeting and note-cards. This year, the new "Journey" card, designed by Anabel, 18, of Houston, Texas, reveals the silhouette of a shepherd traveling through the night. The design features dark purple shading and detailed drawings. The collection also includes cards celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hannukah.
The "Longhorn Ornament," designed by Kolton, 12, of Groves, Texas, is a piece that represents a unique take on a statewide icon. The ornament features a longhorn dressed in a Santa Claus outfit, with a colorful string of lights wrapped around its horns. The artwork that inspired this item illustrates the creative side of its designer and his knack for developing pieces with a regional appeal.
CAP's mission is to support young cancer patients and their families through the sale of products using their artwork. Funds generated each year allow children to participate in summer camps, scholarships, an annual rehabilitative ski trip to Utah and other patient-focused programs. Since its inception in 1973, more than $27 million has been returned to continue this goal.
"With each original design and product, CAP affirms our commitment to making life better for children with cancer," Murray said. "It's important to recognize the bravery and talent of each child."
Texas shoppers can find a selection of items at area grocery stores and other retail establishments. Shoppers in Houston can visit the Children's Art Project Boutique in the Uptown Park Shopping Center and all four MD Anderson gift shops.
