UT MD Anderson Cancer Center Hosts Annual Global Conference in Norway

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Norwegian Cancer Consortium (NCC) will host the 2012 Global Academic Programs (GAP) Conference May 14-16, in Oslo, Norway. The annual conference brings together hundreds of oncologists, researchers and students from a growing, global network to strengthen research and academic collaborations.
MD Anderson has built the largest global, academic network of cancer centers, hospitals and universities - called Sister Institutions - working collaboratively to lessen the world's cancer burden. The conference will feature workshops designed to foster the exchange of research results and ideas among the network's member institutions. Subjects include multiple specific cancer types, palliative medicine, new drugs and cancer registries. The event will also feature a nursing track.
Barry White, United States ambassador to Norway, will open the ceremonies. Ronald DePinho, M.D., MD Anderson president, who was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences, will present the first plenary lecture. Other plenary presentations will explore a range of topics, including cancer survivorship and personalized medicine.
Launched in 2005 as a forum for Sister Institutions, this year marks the first time the conference will be held outside of MD Anderson's Houston campus. NCC, which is composed of Oslo University Hospital, Stavanger University Hospital and the Cancer Registry of Norway, is the first Sister Institution to co-host the conference.
The Sister Institution Network also includes member institutions in Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
The network institutions share the mission of advancing cancer research to eliminate cancer globally. Each institution brings a unique perspective, access to regional data and specialized research expertise. The resulting collaboration promises to accelerate discovery and improvements in understanding and treating cancer worldwide. 05/11/12
