MD Anderson to provide skin cancer screenings, cancer prevention education at Shell Houston Open
Screenings, consultations to be offered free to public at Golf Club of Houston
MD Anderson News Release March 02, 2017
Cancer prevention specialists from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will provide skin cancer screenings free to the public, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Shell Houston Open, Houston’s premier PGA TOUR event at the Golf Club of Houston, 5860 Wilson Road in Humble.
Physicians will perform the skin cancer screenings in a private area adjacent to MD Anderson’s Strike Through Cancer Pavilion near the 18th green at Golf Club of Houston. Screenings take about 10 minutes, and appointments are not necessary. Tournament attendees also may meet with MD Anderson cancer prevention specialists in a group or one-on-one setting to discuss prevention-related topics and learn tips for healthful living.
“Since up to 50 percent of cancer cases in the U.S. can be prevented, educating the public is a critical part of MD Anderson’s mission to end cancer,” said Therese Bevers, M.D., professor of Clinical Cancer Prevention and medical director of the Lyda Hill Cancer Prevention Center and prevention outreach programs at MD Anderson. “Through our relationship with the Shell Houston Open and the PGA TOUR, we have educated millions of people on ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Our goal in offering on-site specialists and free skin cancer screenings at the tournament is to continue making an impact on our local community.”
MD Anderson’s Strike Through Cancer Pavilion will be available from Thursday, March 30 through Sunday, April 2, allowing spectators to sign messages of hope on the Strike Through Cancer Wall, receive free UV-protectant sunglasses and SPF 30 lip balm, and learn more about ways to reduce cancer risk. Spectators also have access to MD Anderson’s shaded, public bleachers on the 18th green. To ensure tournament visitors remain protected throughout the day, MD Anderson has provided stations around the course with free Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen SPF 50.
