Making Cancer History®: Free seminar returns to Atlanta

Atlanta resident and cancer survivor joins MD Anderson experts at Sept. 20 seminar

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center brings its signature Making Cancer History® Seminar to Atlanta for the third time, 8:30-10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 103 West, 103 W. Paces Ferry Rd. NW. Oncologists from the nation’s No. 1 cancer center will share recent developments in cancer research and patient care. In addition, Atlanta resident and cancer survivor Steve Hamilton will share his story of overcoming stage IV melanoma as a patient at MD Anderson. 

The free seminar is open to the public and includes breakfast. Doors open at 8 a.m. Seating is limited, and registration is requested. To register, email events@mdanderson.org or call 866-262-9029 and press 6 to leave a message.

Presentations will feature:

  • Thomas Buchholz, M.D., professor, Radiation Oncology, who will give an overview of MD Anderson
  • Elizabeth Mittendorf, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor, Breast Surgical Oncology, who will provide an update on ongoing efforts to mobilize the patient’s immune system to fight breast cancer
  • Randal Weber, M.D., professor and chair, Head and Neck Surgery, who will focus on the value of a team approach to cancer care

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations.

The seminar coincides with the PGA TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club. As the official cancer center of the PGA TOUR,
MD Anderson will be onsite at the tournament, Sept. 21-24, promoting sun safety and providing golf fans with sunscreen, SPF lip balm, sunglasses and shaded seating on the No. 15 and No. 18 greens. MD Anderson will offer free skin cancer screenings to the general public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22-23 in the So Cool Zone near the No. 7 tee. No appointment is necessary.

Since March 1944, more than 1.2 million people have sought care at MD Anderson, including more than 12,000 people from Georgia. The MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors, which provides leadership and support for MD Anderson, includes four members from Georgia.
