Joel Dahmen named MD Anderson's official PGA TOUR ambassador

MD Anderson, Dahmen to educate golf community on sun safety, cancer prevention

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the official cancer center of the PGA TOUR, today announced its partnership with Joel Dahmen, PGA TOUR golf professional. Dahmen will serve as MD Anderson’s official PGA TOUR ambassador to educate the public on cancer prevention and to promote the institution’s mission to end cancer.

Dahmen is no stranger to the impact cancer can have on a family, having lived through the loss of his mother, who died of pancreatic cancer during his junior year of high school. In 2011, Dahmen received his own cancer diagnosis – testicular cancer. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, he made a full recovery and returned to golf.

“As a cancer survivor, I am proud to serve as MD Anderson's official PGA TOUR ambassador, and I am dedicated to raising awareness of the risks of cancer, so that others may know a future free of cancer," Dahmen said. “I’m also passionate about educating the public on the importance of cancer prevention – especially around sun safety.”

Dahmen's commitment to cancer prevention already is well-known to many in the golf community. Leading by example on the golf course, he regularly wears a bucket hat to protect his skin from the sun. In his new ambassador role, Dahmen will strengthen his commitment to cancer prevention as well as raise awareness of MD Anderson’s mission to end cancer through public events, social media and fundraising opportunities

“Joel takes sun safety and cancer prevention seriously, and we are delighted to welcome him as our official ambassador,” said Dr. Stephen Hahn, chief medical executive, MD Anderson. “MD Anderson is driven to defeat cancer, and we are grateful to have an ambassador, like Joel, who shares our passion for this critical mission.”

Today, during the John Deere Classic Pro-Am, Dahmen will meet Benjamin Bornstein, a three-time cancer survivor, Chicago local and golf fan. To signal the start of the new partnership while on the course, Dahmen will wear his signature bucket hat, which now features MD Anderson’s strike-through-cancer logo front and center. The MD Anderson logo also will appear on his shirt sleeve, an additional reminder of his commitment to the cause and the mission to end cancer.

As the official cancer center of the PGA TOUR, MD Anderson has educated thousands of professional golfers and spectators on sun safety, the risks of skin cancer and the importance of early cancer detection. Since 2015, the institution has provided fans with critical sun safety elements, including shaded seating and more than 200 gallons of free sunscreen. MD Anderson health care providers have conducted more than 1,500 free skin cancer screenings for players, caddies and spectators.

MD Anderson will have a presence at several upcoming tournaments through the end of the year, including the NORTHERN TRUST in New Jersey, the TOUR Championship in Atlanta and the Houston Open.
