MD Anderson News Release 09/10/13

Runners and walkers will hit the streets for the sixth annual AIM for the Cure Melanoma Walk and Fun Run to raise funds and awareness for the disease. The event on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. is co-hosted by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and The AIM at Melanoma Foundation.

The 5K non-certified run begins outside MD Anderson’s Lowry and Peggy Mays Clinic, located at 1155 Pressler St., and winds through the Texas Medical Center.  Participants will join cancer survivors, patients and family members to support the institution’s melanoma research efforts.

“As oncologists who treat patients with melanoma, one of the most important duties we have is to educate the public about skin cancer risks and how to reduce them,” said Sapna Patel, M.D., MD Anderson assistant professor in Melanoma Medical Oncology. “We know events like this present an opportunity to engage those with a stake in reducing the disease’s impact.”

Additionally, free skin cancer screenings will be available from 6– 9 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Other race day activities include sunscreen application demonstrations, a kids’ zone and various food vendors.

Live entertainment will be provided by Chemo Sabe, an organization supporting cancer survivors through music performances and Greg Lizee, Ph.D., associate professor also in Melanoma Medical Oncology. Lizee recorded an inspirational song dedicated to cancer patients and their families called “Hold On.”

Melanoma is one of the most commonly diagnosed and the most dangerous form of skin cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 76,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2013.  Unlike some common cancers, melanoma has a wide age range distribution, occurring in both younger and older men and women.
