Neuro-Oncology Clinical Research Summer Program
The Department of Neuro-Oncology College Student Program
This innovative college student program offers a competitive training opportunity for undergraduate students in the greater Houston metropolitan area, lasting between six to ten weeks. This immersive trainee program allows scholars to engage in hands-on learning from dedicated
clinical research staff, research coordinators/nurses, data/regulatory coordinators, and faculty mentors (project mentors). Participants will gain valuable job shadowing experiences that expose them to clinical research andprepare them for future careers.
The training will include a capstone project and will be managed by the department program director, who will facilitate professional development and networking opportunities for the trainees. The program structure focuses on individual clinical research goals, divided into weekly segments that encompass mentorship on projects and potential poster submissions for national conferences.
By the end of the program, participants will be well-prepared for future careers in the medical and scientific fields, equipped with both knowledge and practical experience.

The following information is required on the application:
- Personal and demographic information
- Official transcript(s) from undergraduate university
- Statement of research experience & area(s) of interest. In addition to detailing any research experience that you may have, please use this section to highlight any specific areas of research you would like to explore this summer of faculty mentor that you would like to train with. If you do not have any research experience to date, please indicate describe your interest in pursuing an academic and/or professional career in cancer research.
- Two letters of recommendation uploaded by your referee. At least one reference should come from a science or math professor. The other may be from an advisor, counselor or health care advisor/mentor with whom you worked in a prior program. Both letters must be submitted by your referees directly to SLATE.
Once you submit your application, you will be prompted to create a SLATE account where you can add the contact information for your referees. Once referees are added to your SLATE account, an emailed link will be sent through the system so that your referees may upload their letters of recommendation.
Incomplete applications will be purged after the deadline has passed.
Eligibility
- Trainees participating in the program must be undergraduate students attending college within the greater Houston metropolitan area who are in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year and are in good academic standing.
Stipend, Housing, Expenses
- Trainees are eligible for a stipend for the duration of the program.
- The stipend covers may cover housing, living, and travel expenses, with no extra allowances provided.
- Stipends will be calculated based on the actual days worked and will be distributed on the 5th and 20th of each month, after deducting the necessary federal taxes.
Mentor Match Process
- Trainees enrolled in the college student program will receive a project mentor assigned by the program director.
- The mentors are experienced faculty members and professionals who guide the trainees through their research projects, offering valuable insights and support.
- The mentorship process is designed to help students develop their skills in scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Additionally, trainees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on laboratory work, attend seminars, and participate in academic discussions, all of which enrich their learning experience.
- The mentor matching process may take up to four weeks. Trainees will be notified of their assigned mentor by the program director.
