Observer Opportunities in Cancer Prevention
Comprised of five departments, multiple centers and two institutes, MD Anderson's Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences is home to one of the largest and most developed cancer prevention programs in the nation. As part of MD Anderson's ongoing commitment to education, our institution welcomes clinicians and researchers employed at other academic and health care institutions to come watch and listen to our experts in action.

Psychophysiology Laboratory
The Psychophysiology Laboratory Observer and STEP Visitor Program is accepting a limited number of observers in the department of Behavorial Science to immerse motivated trainees in the scientific research conducted at the Psychophysiology Laboratory, equipping them with a comprehensive understanding of the methodologies and techniques pivotal to the lab's objectives.
Participants will gain knowledge through a blend of self-paced online courses and dynamic in-person lectures delivered by the Principal Investigator (PI) and other trained members of the staff.
A significant focus of the program is on skill development in utilizing advanced software for the analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, critical tools in the field of psychophysiological research.
To consolidate their learning and demonstrate their mastery of new skills, trainees are expected to present the research findings from projects that they conduct at their home institutions or the results from their training during their tenure at the lab, at the laboratory's weekly meetings. These presentations serve not only as a platform for showcasing their progress but also as an opportunity for constructive feedback and professional growth.

Learning Objectives
Upon completing the program, participants are expected to achieve the following learning objectives:
- Acquire Comprehensive Knowledge and Fluency in Laboratory's Core Scientific Themes: Participants will develop a deep understanding of the laboratory's research focus areas, such as the psychophysiology of substance use disorders and maladaptive reward-seeking behaviors. This includes grasping the theoretical underpinnings and the practical implications of these areas of study.
- Gain Proficiency in Brain Imaging Techniques: Participants will become adept at employing the laboratory's primary brain imaging methodologies, including Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). This objective encompasses not only the operational aspects of these technologies but also their application in ongoing research.
- Master Data Analysis Software: Participants will achieve proficiency in using the software tools for data analysis utilized in the laboratory, such as Brain Vision Analyzer, Brain Voyager, and LabVIEW. Mastery of these tools is essential for interpreting and analyzing psychophysiological data effectively.
- Enhance Scientific Presentation Skills: Participants will refine their ability to deliver clear, organized, and impactful scientific presentations. This includes improving their capacity to communicate complex ideas and research findings to a diverse audience, fostering greater engagement and understanding.
These objectives are designed to equip observers with a robust skill set and knowledge base, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the field of psychophysiology and beyond.
