Transplant/Oncology Infectious Diseases Fellowship
The MD Anderson Transplant and Oncology Infectious Diseases fellowship enables trainees to become leading subspecialists in the transplant and oncology field of infectious diseases.
Fellows in our program gain more experience in a variety of common and uncommon infectious diseases in immunocompromised, cancer and transplant patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted cell therapy and stem cell transplant. They receive and participate in didactic and educational activities, including scholarly research.
Our program, which has been approved by the Texas Medical Board since 2019, also includes rotations to the Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH) and the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC) for solid organ transplant.
A Letter from our Program Director
Dear applicant,
Hello and welcome. Thank you for your interest in our Transplant and Oncology Infectious Diseases Fellowship training program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Our comprehensive cancer center offers inpatient and outpatient rotations to ID fellows who are seeking advanced training. Fellows who have completed the requirements for board certification in an ACGME-approved ID program, can seek additional training (1-2 years) in our Transplant and Oncology infectious Diseases nonstandard program (NST) approved by the Texas Medical Board.
Infectious Diseases clinicians and researchers are witnessing a revolution in cancer care with the development of new treatment modalities including immunotherapy and targeted cell therapies. Patients are severely immunocompromised during cancer therapy and post-transplant and have a substantial risk of opportunistic and life-threatening infections. Furthermore, the emergence of multidrug resistant organisms has significantly complicated their management. This created the need for advanced training in infectious diseases in transplant and oncology.
If you are interested in joining our NST program, I invite you to visit our website. There, you will find much information on the program, our faculty, rotations offered, our clinics and hospital. I am looking forward to hearing from you and please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at pcokhuysen@mdanderson.org.
Sincerely,
Pablo C. Okhuysen, M.D., FACP, FIDSA

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
