Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship
The Colon and Rectal Surgery department at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accepting applications for a one-year advanced training fellowship in Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery. This fellowship provides an in-depth clinical experience focused on the multidisciplinary management of patients with colon, rectal and anal cancer, including primary and recurrent disease.
Operatively, the fellows actively participate in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries in a high-volume, dedicated academic cancer center. The operative experience includes multi-visceral and exenterative resections. The clinical experience includes exposure to advanced imaging, medical and radiation oncology with additional exposure to surgical pathology available.
In addition, fellows will learn to manage premalignant conditions, as well as the tailored treatment of patients with hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes. Fellows participate in weekly multidisciplinary treatment-planning conferences that include the colorectal multidisciplinary tumor board, as well as a dedicated rectal cancer multidisciplinary planning conference. Additionally, the Colorectal Surgery department conducts a case conference and complex pelvic surgery conference, both of which are focused on operative planning.
Letter from our Program Director
On behalf of our faculty, Advanced Practice Providers and staff, we are grateful for your interest in our Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship. As the program director, it is my pleasure to introduce our program to you and outline the opportunities that training at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center can provide.
At the center of our training program is our faculty. Our department consists of faculty who have trained in colorectal surgery as well as faculty who have trained in complex general surgical oncology. Our faculty is dedicated to providing an immersive learning experience for our fellows to help them continue to develop their medical knowledge, technical skills and research portfolio. We are proud of both our clinical programs and research programs in robotic colorectal surgery, cytoreduction for peritoneal dissemination and exenterative surgery, young onset colorectal cancer, and lateral pelvic lymphadenectomy.
Additionally, we pride ourselves in multidisciplinary care and work closely with our colleagues in medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical pathology. These relationships are critical to designing effective treatment plans for our
patients. These collaborations occur informally on daily basis in clinic, and formally through our weekly multidisciplinary conferences for colorectal cancer and a dedicated rectal cancer conference. As future leaders in the field of colorectal surgical oncology, our fellows engage in these conferences and clinic conversations to ensure a well-rounded education in colorectal cancer care.
While our program is very clinically focused, we also strive to create an environment for ongoing academic development of our fellows. There are opportunities to participate in the full spectrum or research, including clinical research, translational research, large database studies and clinical trial design. Specifically, through the Division of Surgery, our fellows participate in a formal clinical trials course that includes didactics and small group work on developing clinical trial concepts.
Overall, we believe our Oncologic Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship offers a comprehensive training program for both US and international surgical trainees, and we welcome your application. If you have any questions about our program, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Brian K. Bednarski, M.D., MEHP

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
