General Internal Medicine Fellowship
The General Internal Medicine Fellowship at MD Anderson is a 12-month program that combines personalized research opportunities, diverse clinical training and impactful quality improvement to help address internal medicine issues of patients at risk for or with cancer along their cancer care trajectory. We accept one fellow each year.
Fellows participating in the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program receive exceptional instruction in the clinical care of patients and become well-prepared to make substantial contributions to our field through leadership and clinical, basic science and translational research, and our alumni go on to varied careers across the globe. Upon completion of this program, fellows receive a certificate of completion from our Office of Graduate Medical Education.
A Letter from our Program Director
Hello and welcome to the MD Anderson General Internal Medicine Fellowship program. I am delighted to share with you what our program has to offer. On behalf of our fellowship program team and the Department of General Internal Medicine, we are grateful for your interest.
Our overall goal is to train physicians who can clearly articulate and fully participate in evidence-based and high-quality clinical care of patients at risk for cancer, currently receiving anticancer therapies, and those living with the lasting effects of cancer and its treatment side effects. We consider the ideal candidate to be curious, open-minded, and be willing to be independent and self-led in the basic skills of clinical research and design, as this is a brief stop on the candidate’s sojourn in life.
We would like to help physicians become better collaborators with patients with cancer, and with colleagues in the oncology space. Our 12-month program allows plenty of time for reflection and contemplation of what matters most to you and how that might inform the next part of your journey with an emphasis on helping patients with cancer with their whole person.
Here, you will have ample time to explore rewarding clinical and research experiences in the outpatient and inpatient environments within our main MD Anderson campus in Houston. We intentionally select only one candidate each year to provide a completely personalized training program to meet the needs and wants of the fellow and match those to the generous resources available at MD Anderson.
I’m so glad you are considering our program. Please feel free to reach out to me or our fellowship program team if you have any questions.
Warmly,
Jessica P. Hwang, M.D., MPH, DipABLM

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
