Dermatopathology Fellowship

About the Program

MD Anderson offers a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Dermatopathology with the possibility of extending it for an additional year, focusing more on research and hands-on dermatopathology experience.

There are two funded positions each year and Pathology-trained and Dermatology-trained applicants are equally considered.

The Dermatopathology fellowship offers exposure to a large load of cases, ranging from biopsies to large surgical excisions, lymphadenectomies, as well as numerous outside referral and consultation cases submitted to our institution for a second opinion.

A significant number of our cases represent diagnostic challenges, primarily in the oncologic area (primary cutaneous carcinomas, melanoma, soft tissue tumors, lymphomas and systemic diseases/ metastases involving the skin), as well as other cancer- and therapy-related processes, such as graft-versus-host disease and cutaneous adverse effects related to targeted therapies. A very important and challenging aspect of our practice is represented by melanocytic lesions that are submitted to be reviewed in our department prior to the patient’s clinic appointment. However, we also offer a well-balanced load of inflammatory and non-neoplastic skin disorders by rotating at Baylor College of Medicine Dermatology Clinics and UT Health Science Center at Houston, as well as by offering rotations in a community/ private practice-based setting.

Fellows participate in daily sign outs, consensus and teaching conferences, as well as Grand Rounds, quality assurance/ improvement conferences and, depending on their primary specialty, additional training in dermatology or anatomic pathology (such as rotations in soft tissue, head & neck pathology, etc.) as per ACGME requirements. Experience in frozen section assessment of skin specimens, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, molecular pathology, interpretation of Mohs specimens, and laboratory management is provided. Research projects and presentations at local, national and international meetings are encouraged and at least one completed manuscript is required for graduation.

Requirements

The fellowship is available to individuals who have completed training in pathology or dermatology in an ACGME-accredited residency program. Board-eligibility in either AP, AP/CP or Dermatology is required by the beginning of the fellowship.

• ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
• USMLE (passed within 3 attempts)
