Apprenticeship Programs
MD Anderson is committed to promoting the growth and development of individuals across the health care spectrum, including those in clinical and non-clinical roles.
Our apprenticeship pathway programs offer learners many benefits, including:
- Participating in an earn-while-you-learn program that provides a paycheck and employee benefits
- The opportunity to experience prospective career as full-time workers
- The advantage of adding relevant working experience to resumes immediately after graduation
- The potential to transition into MD Anderson’s workforce as a permanent employee
- Earning a nationally recognized U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship credential

Available Pathway Programs
Below are the pathway programs MD Anderson sponsors independently and through collaborative agreements with community colleges in the Houston-area.
Clinical Coding Assistant
MD Anderson’s Clinical Coding Apprenticeship Program also has an apprenticeship component. Clinical coders play an instrumental role in the delivery of exceptional patient care, accurate billing and seamless operations.
Apprenticeship positions are typically built into the curriculum of the one-year program, and apprentices receive pay while they receive their coding education throughout the year.
This program accepts six positions every January. When actively recruiting for the program, the application link for this program can be found on the MD Anderson Careers site.
Culinary Roles
MD Anderson collaborates with Houston Community College’s Culinary and Hospitality Apprentice program to offer students apprenticeships via three distinct tracks:
- Chef, which trains students on how to handle, prepare and store food properly and lead a successful career in the kitchen
- Food service aide, which focuses on cumulating culinary knowledge and developing strong communication skills to facilitate conversations with inpatients, especially those with restrictive diets, as they place room service meals
- Hospital Food Service Apprentice “Waitstaff,” which trains students on how to properly assist in the preparation and delivery of meals to patients, and interact with patients and visitors at food and beverage stations
MD Anderson hires apprentices for these positions as opportunities become available. Learn more about this program on HCC’s website.
Endoscopy Technician
MD Anderson collaborates with Houston Community College’s Endoscopy Technician Certificate program to offer students apprenticeships withing our endoscopy team. Endoscopy technicians are critical members of the care team in an endoscopy suite, as they assist in the delivery of patient care before, during and after endoscopic procedures.
MD Anderson hires apprentices for this program in September. Learn more about this program on HCC’s website.
Mammography Technologist
MD Anderson partners with its own School of Health Professions to offer apprenticeships to students enrolled in the Mammography Advanced Technical Certificate Program at the School of Health professions.
Apprenticeships are offered at the end of the one-semester program based on availability. These offers typically are extended in January or September. Learn more about the School of Health Profession’s Mammography Advanced Technical Certificate Program.
Patient Care Technician/Certified Nurse Aide
MD Anderson collaborates with Houston Community College’s Certified Nurse Aide program to bring students in as apprentices in patient care technician (PCT) roles. PCTs offer bedside support for inpatients at our hospital.
This program accepts applications on a rolling basis, as it is offered consistently throughout the year. Learn more about this program on HCC’s website.
Phlebotomist
MD Anderson collaborates with Houston Community College’s Phlebotomy program to offer students apprenticeships in our Division of Diagnostic Imaging.
MD Anderson hires two apprentices every year – one in February and another in August. Learn more about this program on HCC’s website.
