Urinary Tract & Pelvic Reconstruction Fellowship

MD Anderson’s Urology department offers a unique program for urologists seeking to develop a career in genitourinary reconstruction in an environment that fosters clinical acumen and research excellence. Our cancer center has consistently been ranked the No. 1 cancer center in the United States and our graduates – across all disciplines – are well poised to take on leadership roles both nationally and internationally.

The primary purpose of the fellowship is to train genitourinary reconstructive surgeons who are uniquely qualified to lead multidisciplinary reconstructive treatment of the oncology patient undergoing treatment for pelvic malignancy.  

Trainees are taught the pre-operative evaluation, surgical planning and technical skills to comprehensively manage the genitourinary concerns of patients with pelvic malignancies - urologic, colorectal, gynecologic and pelvic sarcoma. Additionally, the complexities of managing structural and functional urinary tract disorders after surgery and/or radiation are emphasized.  

Research is a critical component of the fellowship program with a focus on characterization of urinary sequelae resulting from treatment for non-urologic cancers and reduction of genitourinary complications in patients with pelvic malignancies.

Program structure

The program consists of two years of clinical activity integrated with clinical research including formal research didactics. Masters level courses in epidemiology, statistics and clinical trial design are a required for successful completion of the fellowship. For highly motivated applicants, a certificate or degree programs in clinical research are available through the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center.

How to apply

Our program is not currently involved in the match program. Therefore, applicants must complete the attached program application. 

U.S. medical school graduates must be eligible to hold a Texas medical license. Foreign medical school graduates need to have a valid ECFMG certificate and complete all three parts of the USMLE.

All applications and required documents must be submitted on or before December 15, 2023, to be considered for an interview for the 2024-2025 academic year. Candidates will be contacted regarding an interview date.

• Official medical school transcript (English translation required for foreign graduates)
• Certificates of completion from all residencies or fellowships
• Letter of good standing from current program director
• Official USMLE transcript
• Valid ECFMG certificate (for foreign medical school graduates)
