MOON SHOTS PROGRAM
Most ovarian cancers are serous carcinomas, which develop in the tissue lining the ovaries and are subtyped into high-grade and low-grade. High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is an aggressive subtype that causes nearly 90% of ovarian cancer deaths. While a large percentage of women with this type respond well to upfront chemotherapy, recurrence often develops within a couple of years. Low-grade serous ovarian cancer accounts for around 10% of cases, affects younger women and is less responsive to standard chemotherapy.
The Ovarian Cancer Moon Shot® is focused on finding a cure for high- and low-grade ovarian cancer by rapidly adapting pre-clinical findings into new treatment options.

Despite the emergence of new therapies, the majority of ovarian cancer patients will develop recurrent disease that becomes resistant to available drugs. Shannon Westin, M.D., co-leader of the Ovarian Cancer Moon Shot, explains how her team is directing clinical and research efforts to uncover mechanisms of disease resistance and identify new treatment options.
The Anderson Algorithm addresses a key issue: which should come first as frontline treatment for women with advanced ovarian cancer: chemotherapy or surgery? Developed through Moon Shot efforts, the algorithm boosts complete tumor resection over 85% for those triaged to undergo upfront debulking surgery.
