A standard complete blood count test can detect abnormalities in the blood such as low counts of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. However, each blood disorder has different diagnostic tests that provide more details for an accurate diagnosis.
Imaging exams can be used to diagnose blood clotting problems. Bone marrow aspiration biopsies can be used to diagnose problems with blood cell production. During these procedures, a needle that is inserted into the hip bone is used to withdraw a small amount of bone marrow, the liquid in the middle of large bones that produces different blood cells. The marrow can then be studied for different disorders.
