The focus of the Tweardy Laboratory is understanding and modulating the host damage response to microbial and traumatic injury to treat disease. The clinical research interests of David Tweardy, M.D., include the role of apoptosis and inflammation in susceptibility to infection, especially following injuries.
His basic research interests over the past 20 years have centered on cytokines and cytokine signaling and currently focus on the second messenger—signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3—critical in the signal transduction pathway of over 40 cytokines, as well as the role of STAT3 in inflammation and cell survival.
